General Meeting Unofficial Minutes
Monday 16 October 2023 at 6.30 pm

Attendees (15): Jamie Willock (Chair), Bob Beckett, Julie Bradley, Robin Schmitt, Bob Schmitt, Ben West, Max Salamon, Greg Willmon, Stefan Ochman, Jerry Gassner, Stella Wenstob, Stacy Denton, Ben West, Anne Stewart, Wayne Markell, and Marnie McAughtrie.

Acknowledgement of Indigenous Lands: The BCAS acknowledges that the land on which we meet is within the Traditional territory of the Huu-ay-aht First Nations where indigenous peoples have lived since time immemorial.
Statement of Inclusivity: The BCAS is responsible for fostering a public forum within its community to facilitate communications and services that diverse groups identify as respectful, inclusive and accessible.
The meeting was called to order at 6.32 pm.

ACRD DIRECTOR’S REPORT – by Bob Beckett
- I attended the Huu-ay-aht ribbon cutting ceremony for the Bamfield Road Reconciliation Project this past Tuesday and had the pleasure of speaking briefly to the many folks who had assembled to hear the various speakers, and government officials. On behalf of our community, I passed on our congratulations on completing the project and thanked former Premier John Horgan as well as former Chief Councillor Robert Dennis for their support, vision and leadership.
- ACRD staff will be holding a public Official Community Plan for Bamfield at the Community School from 4 – 7 November 9th. This will be our first opportunity to learn firsthand the process involved in reviewing and updating our OCP. ACRD Staff will lead us in discussion, answer your questions, and facilitate table discussions.
TREASURER’S REPORT Susan Derasp absent, report will be made at November’s meeting.
CORRESPONDENCES
- Letter in regard to the safety concerns on the newly sealed road requested at September’s meeting is to be drafted in joint by Jamie Willock of BCAS and Stefan Ochman of the Road Safety Association. It will likely go out this week.
COMMUNITY REPORTS
- Bamfield Community School – Robin Schmitt
- School running smoothly and kids are excited for Halloween.
- Bamfield Community School Association – Julie Bradley
- Jaslyn sends her apologies.
- Authors, Oysters and Ales was held successfully last Saturday. Over $9000 were raised.
- All events are posted in the new printed Fall Program guide – available at the school.
- Some upcoming events include:
- October 27th at the school is a Monster Mash Halloween Extravaganza with a bake sale, costume swap, games, and dancing.
- Wednesday nights, 6-7 PM in November they will host a financial literacy series.
- November 22 Aneri will lead a cooking class.
- Contact the BCSA for more information and to register for these events.
- Road Safety Association – Stefan Ochman
- AGM was held on October 10th after the ribbon cutting ceremony.
- Same board of directors re-elected: Sean Rogers, Bob Beckett, Bob Baden, Wayne Markell, and Stefan Ochman.
- In attendance at the meeting were Karen Haugen (executive directory of HFN) as a liaison for the Road Reconciliation Working group and Dean Faushon of Tsawak-qin (previously Western Forest Products).
- Karen Haugen presented the RSA with a letter of support to take the lead on the construction of a memorial cairn at Km 38 for the 2019 UVic bus accident.
- Dean Faushon said vehicle speeding a major problem – recommended witnesses report speeders to the RCMP by taking down vehicle license plate number and the time.
- Bridges will be brushed soon.
- Newly sealed road has a warranty from Hazelwood for one year.
- Road Reconciliation Working Group made up of representatives from HFN, forest company stakeholders (Mosaic, Huuayaht, and Tsawak-qin), and the Ministries of Transport, Forestry, and Industry will oversee the roads future management.
- Huu-ay-aht - Bamfield Community Forest – Stefan Ochman
- No new meetings to report on.
- Tom Campbell stepped down as Vice President.
- Stella Wenstob to join as interim board member.
- Next meeting will be held October 26, 6 PM at the Firehall and over zoom.
- On Agenda is the draft forest harvest plan.
- Potentially will be harvesting blowdown old growth cedar and is exploring various market options.
- Directors successfully hosted Bamfield Fungus Festival in September.
- Bamfield Chamber of Commerce – Marnie McAughtrie
- No meeting has been held since June.
- However, there has been an increase in day tripper traffic at the store and many interested in community events and staying the night.
- Marnie encouraged the posting of community events and any business promotions (i.e.. restaurant hours and specials) to the Facebook groups Visit Bamfield and the Bamfield Corkboard to support the extension of the shoulder season.
- Bamfield Arts Council – Julie Bradley
- Christmas Craft Fair will be held at the Rix Centre December 2, 11AM- 2PM.
